Dear MLA __________,
My name is __________ and I am writing to you today because I do not support parental rights legislation in Alberta.
This legislation would lead to detrimental impacts on trans people in Alberta. When it comes to trans youth, creating a legislation that would require permission for a trans youth to use a different name or pronouns in a school setting will lead to youth being unnecessarily outed before they are ready.
For many trans people choosing to socially transition is a necessary choice, not a convenient or temporary one. This reality includes the youth who will be impacted by this legislation. If a youth from an unsafe home environment is to experience the need to socially transition, it is imperative they can do that without risk to their ability to survive. I call on you as a constituent of your riding to act in the interest of all people of your riding, including trans youth.
Giving trans people the opportunity to develop into healthy trans adults benefits our communities. Prioritizing the rights of a parent over the development of a child will cause detrimental effects to transgender people. I urge you to stop the advancement of this legislation and protect vulnerable youth.
Sincerely,
__________
